Buy CBD Oil Online

You can’t buy CBD oil or any other CBD products on Amazon. Here’s why and how this might change in the future. While marijuana is still listed as an illegal drug, hemp is now legalized on a federal level, but can you buy CBD oil on Amazon? According to Amazon, any hemp oil …

Can You Buy CBD Oil on Amazon? (Sept. 2022)

These days you can buy almost anything off Amazon. Unfortunately, CBD oil is not on that list.

Amazon prohibits the sale of all CBD products. The only exception to this is Amazon’s UK site, where a pilot program allows some companies to sell CBD oil and other products containing CBD.

Still, some people get duped into buying hemp seed oil products on Amazon, thinking that they contain CBD. Here’s everything you need to know about buying CBD on Amazon.

Table of Contents

Amazon doesn’t allow the sale of CBD

According to the seller information page for drugs, Amazon doesn’t allow the sale of products containing cannabidiol (CBD). Although Amazon doesn’t clearly explain why CBD is banned, it likely has to do with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The page notes that “Drug products must be approved by the FDA for over-the-counter (OTC) sale.” At this time, CBD is not approved for OTC sale and the FDA has stated that “it is illegal to market CBD by adding it to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement.” The FDA has only approved one CBD-containing prescription drug called Epidiolex for the treatment of rare types of seizures.

Amazon also says that the sale of some topical CBD products may be allowed on Amazon Fresh and Amazon Whole Foods Market, two of its grocery stores. But these topicals are restricted to certain geographical locations and we couldn’t find any products when we searched for them online.

Buying CBD oil on Amazon UK

Although you can’t buy CBD oil on Amazon US and most other dedicated country websites, it is allowed on Amazon UK. Amazon announced a special pilot program for its British website in February 2021:

The listing and sale of ingestible hemp products, including lozenges, e-liquids, sprays and oils that contain CBD or other cannabinoids are prohibited on Amazon.co.uk, except for sellers participating in a limited, invite-only pilot. This pilot only applies to products listed on Amazon.co.uk and is not available on other Amazon websites. The pilot is not accepting additional sellers currently.

Listing Guidelines for Cannabidiol (CBD) and Hemp Products

This means you can buy CBD oil, gummies, capsules, and topical products on Amazon UK. Most of these products are offered by British CBD companies, although some American CBD brands are also available. The best CBD products on Amazon UK include names like CBDfx, Vitality CBD, Blessed CBD, and Grass & Co.

Don’t get duped buying hemp oil on Amazon

CBD products are illegal on Amazon, so why does searching for CBD still bring up hundreds of oil, gummy, capsule, and other products?

If you look at any of these listings, none of them actually mention CBD. Instead, they’re made with hemp seed oil, which is not the same thing as CBD oil.

Hemp oil is pressed from hemp seeds. Meanwhile, CBD oil is usually extracted from hemp flowers, which are covered by trichomes, tiny spheres rich in CBD and other cannabinoids (1).

Hemp seeds don’t naturally contain CBD or any other cannabinoids (although they may have trace amounts from coming in contact with the flowers and leaves) (2). So don’t be duped into buying hemp oil products on Amazon.

Many of these products use misleading tactics to make you think they contain CBD, such as listing “hemp extract” on the label, terms like “high potency,” and showing amounts in milligrams. Another red flag is when these products make claims about reducing pain, anxiety, or any other health benefit that sounds like it’s related to CBD.

Will Amazon allow the sale of CBD in the future?

If CBD products are ever approved as dietary supplements then yes, they might become available on Amazon. Technically speaking, CBD has been federally legal since the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized hemp and hemp-derived products.

But as we noted earlier, the FDA doesn’t consider CBD a dietary supplement. The organization is concerned about the safety of CBD and has been researching its risks and side effects for several years. As a result, CBD is stuck in a weird gray area, even though you can buy it almost anywhere.

But many hemp industry members and politicians are growing frustrated with the FDA’s lack of CBD regulation. They’re working together on the 2023 Farm Bill to remove restrictions on hemp and regulate CBD as a dietary supplement.

Can You Buy CBD Oil on Amazon?

Since the federal legalization of industrial hemp in late 2018, the cannabidiol (CBD) industry is seeing explosive growth. CBD is now used by millions of Americans to help relieve a number of ailments, including inflammation, chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and more — and demand appears to be increasing every year. With CBD so popular, it’s no surprise consumers might flock to the online megastore Amazon to purchase this supplement, which begs the question, “Can you buy CBD oil on Amazon?”

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of the more prevalent cannabinoids present in the cannabis sativa plant (alongside THC), and it’s the most prevalent cannabinoid in hemp. Like THC, CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) , which is in charge of regulating essential functions in the body such as sleep, immune responses, pain control, inflammation, cognition, and memory. This, in part, is why CBD has been found to have such wide-ranging health benefits. Additionally, CBD doesn’t cause that “high” feeling associated with marijuana — making it a great option for those looking for natural solutions to physical and mental ailments without the psychoactive effects of THC.

Is It Legal to Buy CBD on Amazon?

With the 2018 passing of the “Farm Bill,” industrial hemp was declared an agricultural commodity. Marijuana and hemp are both subspecies of cannabis sativa — the defining difference being each plant’s THC content. While marijuana is still listed as an illegal drug, hemp is now legalized on a federal level — and with it, hemp-derived products such as full spectrum CBD oil. Though laws surrounding cannabinoid products vary state to state, CBD oil is generally legal in the U.S. as long as it has a THC content of no more than 0.3%.

So, is it legal to buy CBD on Amazon? Technically, yes — as long as the THC content doesn’t exceed legal standards. But does Amazon permit its sellers to offer CBD on the site? No. And (unfortunately) that’s their prerogative.

Why Won’t Amazon Carry CBD?

As with many of its policies, Amazon keeps its cards well-hidden as to the company’s reasoning for this no-CBD rule. Some experts speculate that Amazon is concerned about the rapidly changing state legislation around CBD, as well as international law, which can be confusing at best.

The Policies Regarding CBD Oil on Amazon

According to Amazon’s online policy , “Listings for products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are prohibited, including but not limited to”:

  • Full spectrum hemp oil
  • Rich hemp oil
  • Products that have been identified as containing CBD

In other words, any hemp oil you find for sale on Amazon isn’t allowed to contain any CBD, otherwise the vendor runs the risk of having their Amazon seller account revoked. Despite this rule, some unscrupulous vendors have been found to be marketing CBD oil as “hemp oil” without any mention of CBD, in an attempt to circumvent Amazon’s policy. These sellers rely on potential buyers to message them directly to ask whether the products contain CBD, but these shady tactics put the sellers, their shops, and potentially their customers at risk.

Is Amazon CBD Legit?

Honestly, it’s hard to say. Consider this, though: if these sellers are lying about their product descriptions, what else might they be hiding?

Even outside of the “not-quite-honest” hemp oil shops on Amazon, it can be tricky to know what you’re getting when purchasing CBD supplements. In 2020, the FDA tested 147 hemp and CBD products and many were found to have CBD content that didn’t match the labeling.

Out of the 102 products that listed a specific amount of CBD on the label:

  • Nearly a fifth contained less than 80 percent of the amount of CBD indicated
  • Nearly half had a CBD content within 20 percent of the amount indicated
  • More than a third contained more than 120 percent of the amount of CBD indicated

Additionally, two products that listed CBD as an ingredient on the label were found to have no CBD at all, and one product was even found to contain concentrations of lead which required further testing.

So, how can you be sure the hemp products on Amazon are pure , organic, or free from contaminants? The short answer: you can’t. At least, not without researching the manufacturer to make sure it’s a trustworthy source. Until the FDA imposes additional regulations regarding the packaging, marketing, and production of CBD oil, your best bet is to order directly from a reputable brand.
